Recently, I was sent the book Plain Wisdom, from WaterBrook Multnomah Book Company to read and review. At first I wasn't sure this was really a book I would be interested in reading the whole way through. However, once I started it I couldn't put it down. This book is the story of a friendship between a plain, jane American woman and an Old Order Amish woman. Throughout the book the women share personal stories from their lives. Miriam (Old Order Amish) shares the trials and joys of being Amish. Cindy (a best selling novelist and regular American wife and mother) shares her stories in comparison. However, perhaps my favorite part of the book were the Amish recipes shared amongst the stories. I photocopied several of them (including one for shoofly pie, potato rolls and buttermilk biscuits, and scalloped potatoes) and stuck them in my home binder to try at a later time. I found myself laughing aloud to many of the stories shared, saddened by others, and feeling like I had much in common with both women. This book was certainly a comfort to my soul and also gave me much insight into the life of an Amish woman as well. I would HIGHLY recommend reading it!
